Nairobi, Kenya
We knew the trip to Kenya would be long (25 hours door-to-door), so we opted to spend a day in Nairobi to adjust our clocks and see a few sites there. Here are photos from three:
An elephant orphanage operated by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in the Nairobi National Park. This facility takes in orphaned elephants, nurses them to health, and returns them to the wild.
The Giraffe Centre, home to the Rothschild Giraffe. This facility is committed to restoring the native population of Rothchild Giraffes in Africa.
The Karen Blixen Home. Did you ever see Out of Africa? The movie is based on her life.
The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Yes, it is an elephant orphanage. They also house other orphaned animals like the zebra and rhino that opened the show
The Giraffe Centre
The goal of the centre is to raise funds for the restoration of the Rothschild Giraffe population and to help you overcome the heebie jeebies of being touched by a giraffe’s tongue.
The Karen Blixen Home
Karen Blixen’s goal was to cultivate coffee at her home at the (then) outskirts of Nairobi. Sadly, the region was not conducive to coffee production. The rusted remains of an imported coffee roaster sit at the edge of the property serving as a home for Tree Hyraxes, which are little nocturnal mammals.
